Simons Artist Statement

My aim is simply to be good at what I do so that people will appreciate and enjoy my work. My influences are largely architectural in nature, and include natural organic forms that harmoniously combine tension, balance, and proportion. I do not use devices of mass production in my work. I consider the qualities imparted only by the handmade object of most importance, this way each piece I create embodies a unique and personal factor. As a creative medium, the diverse possibilities of clay provide an endless source of inspiration and means for personal expression. For this reason I keep my work simple, using the natural fired colours of mainly white clay with no superfluous surface decoration. I believe that my personal strength lies in my passion for these materials, and my commitment to creating original, quality ceramic pieces that I can be proud of.
